(Sorry for my poor English, just for practice)
Colter Stevens, an American Army helicopter pilot whose last memory is flying in Afghanistan, wakes up on a commuter train. However, he discovers that he has assumed the identity of another man. 8 minutes later, the train explodes and Stevens finds himself in some kind of pod. He then talks to someone named Goodwin, who tells him he has to go back and find out who the bomber is. He is sent back to go through the whole thing again for several times and attempts to find who the bomber is but fails again and again. On the side, Stevens finds himself falling for the woman travelling with him while he is still in the other man’s consciousness.
It’s quite creative to apply a theoretical idea of “Parallel Universe" in movies, that’s really new to me. In this movie, Duncan Jones (the Director) assumed the idea of parallel universe existed. Besides, he also assumed that the scientist can make use of the technology of inception to the mind of the dead. Although the movie does not provide any explanation about how the technology worked and why Colter (Leading man) could access to the parallel universe, the shooting of every scene in the virtual world is enchanting and romantic.
The storyline is simple and straightforward, nonetheless, the hidden meaning deserves advanced reflection. What would you do if you had only 8 minutes left before your death? If you have ever thought about this question, I think you will treasure every moment in your life, especially the time shared with the one you love. Every time when the bomb bombed, they(Colter and Christina) are staying with each other calmly, instead of escaping. Especially in a particular scene, they both sitting on the ground of the train, and when the bomb bombed, the whole action was tuned to slow motion. In this moment, I can really feel the love between them, provided courages for them to face the death.
Besides, I can easily see the contrast of the fates of the passengers before and after the removal of the bomb. In the first part of the movie, all the passengers are killed by the explosion. Nonetheless, after Colter had removed the bomb, he knows that the story will be ended after 8 minutes. Thus, he pays a man with couples of dollars and ask the man to joy the passengers. During that period, the atmosphere of the train are filled with joy, and this shows a very strong contrast with those in the first part of the movie. All the passengers are enjoying that period. Colter thinks that will be the last 8 minutes he can have with Christina, so he kissed her. At this moment, the motions of all the passengers stopped, and the photographer move the camera around to show the joy. This is one of the most memorable part of the movie., which shows the contrast very strongly.
To conclude, you may say the story is too simple and it’s strange to combine sci-fi with love story, the shooting of every scene in the train is wonderful and sensational. Last but not least, I hope you would enjoy it.
